Nurse Registration and Fee - NMC Register - PREP

Nurse Registration and Fee

All nurses, midwives and health visitors must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) in order to work in the UK.

The register of nurses is at the centre of the role of the NMC in public protection. The register currently holds around one million names, with around 640,000 of those nurses, holding current registration. The nurse's name is held on a computer database with the nurses personal details, educational qualifications and registration status. (See below for different parts of the register).

The fee for registration is currently £60. Nurses must renew their registration every three years and the fee for re-registration stands at £23.

The NMC Register

The NMC's register is a public record and they provide a free service for employers to check the registration status of nurses, midwives and health visitors whom they may wish to employ. The NMC never release personal details or addresses.

The register is currently divided into 15 parts:

•Part 1 first level nurses trained in general nursing (RGN)
•Part 2 second level nurses trained in general nursing (RGN)
• Part 3 first level nurses trained in the nursing of persons suffering from mental illness
•Part 4 second level nurses trained in the nursing of persons suffering from mental illness (England and Wales)
•Part 5 first level nurses trained in the nursing of persons with learning disabilities
• Part 6 second level nurses trained in the nursing of persons with learning disabilities
• Part 7 second level nurses (Scotland and Northern Ireland)
• Part 8 nurses trained in the nursing of sick children
•Part 9 nurses trained in the nursing of persons suffering from fever
•Part 10 midwives
•Part 11 health visitors
•Part 12 first level nurses trained in adult nursing (Project 2000)
•Part 13 first level nurses trained in mental health nursing (Project 2000)
•Part 14 first level nurses trained in learning disabilities nursing (Project 2000)
•Part 15 first level nurses trained in children's nursing (Project 2000)

PREP

In order to maintain your registration with the NMC you must show that you have undergone the required amount of continuing professional development (CPD) or post registration education and practice (PREP). Further information and advice about the NMC's PREP requirements are available from the NMC's professional advice service available from the NMC at:

The NMC's PREP requirements

There are four key elements to maintaining registration:

completing a notification of practice form at the point of re-registration every three years and/or when your area of professional practice changes to one where you will use a different registerable qualification;

a minimum of five days or equivalent of learning activity every three years;

maintaining a personal professional profile containing details of your professional development;

a return to practice programme if you have not practised for a minimum of 750 hours or 100 working days in the five year period leading up to the renewal of your registration (from 1 April 2000).

You will need to maintain your registration with the NMC, even if a nursing, midwifery or health visiting qualification is not a requirement for your post but you are using your qualification in any way in your work.
